Air Fryer Burgers

Welcome to my ultimate air fryer burgers guide. Originally published in 2015 and updated with new and useful information. Plus, plenty more air fryer burger recipes to try at home in your air fryer.

When you first get an air fryer, you will often feel like that 6 year old in the kitchen with their grandma. In love with what she cooks wishing that you could make that.

But being reminded that you need to take beginner steps with your cookery.

That is what the air fryer can be like. It’s a new way of cooking and you need to learn it in baby steps. The phrase don’t run before you can walk comes to mind.

What I do suggest is that you have an air fryer bucket list. Delicious beginner air fryer recipes that you can grasp easily, and it will build up your air fryer confidence.

Such as our air fryer frozen French fries, air fryer onion rings, air fryer pork ribs, air fryer chicken breast and of course air fryer burgers.

Air fryer burgers are one of the best bucket list starting points and in the top 10 of what us Milners made first when we got into air frying in 2011.

Today is all about answering your air fryer burger questions, giving you our favourite fail safe air fryer burger recipe and enjoying how delicious air fryer burgers are.

Can You Air Fry Burgers?

Lets get the big question out of the way and this is can you air fry burgers, which I want to shout at you with a smile on my face and say ABSOLUTELY!

Not only can you air fry burgers, but they cook perfectly, taste like barbecued burgers and are so SIMPLE.

Best Air Fryer For Burgers

Many air fryers are fantastic for burgers. We have the Philips Air Fryer XL in our kitchen, and this is what we use the most for air fryer burgers. The Cosori air fryer is also a good choice and so is the Power Air Fryer XL.

What I don’t recommend is the Tefal Actifry or air fryer ovens as they just don’t produce the same quality burgers. If burger is your thing focus on getting an air fryer with a basket.

Are Air Fryer Burgers Good?

Yes they are delicious. Here in the Milner house and as mum of 3 kids that also love burgers, we eat air fryer burgers a LOT. In fact, apart from our favourite instant pot frozen hamburgers all our burgers are cooked using the air fryer.

Are Air Fryer Burgers Healthy?

Air fryer burgers are as healthy as you want them to be. Our Mediterranean Paleo Burgers are probably the healthiest and our air fryer Zinger burgers are probably the unhealthiest.

But you can follow our basic recipe for air fryer burgers and not bother adding cheese and you have a healthy burger.

Another fact to consider is that the excess fat from a burger goes into the bottom of the air fryer, in a similar way to if you grilled a burger.

  • Air fryer burgers from frozen are not so healthy but still taste good. Avoid the frozen cheap supermarket ones and instead make your own and batch freeze them for later.

Air Fryer Burger Patty

It is assumed that when you make air fryer burgers you are focusing on a simple air fryer burger patty. Such as an air fryer burger 1/4lb. If you have a bigger or a smaller burger, remember to adjust the cooking time.

I tend to buy packs of ground mince to use in my burger patties and then freeze them in batches of ¼ pound. That way I can defrost, make into my favourite burgers and cook them in the air fryer.

How Do You Air Fry Burgers?

Recipe This | The Ultimate Air Fryer Burgers (3)

Air frying burgers is this SIMPLE:

  1. Prep burger patty ingredients and load into a mixing bowl.
  2. Mix and use a biscuit cutter to make into burger shapes.
  3. Load into the air fryer basket and cook on medium.
  4. Add cheese if you want cheeseburgers.
  5. Load your homemade burgers onto burger buns and serve with your favourite sides.

How To Make Air Fryer Burgers For You?

We all like our burgers in a different way, don’t we? My favourite is air fryer stuffed burgers or air fryer chicken burgers.

If you like hamburgers, you might also like your hamburger cooked to a different style. I like my burger to a medium well, but you may prefer your air fryer hamburger well done.

To make an air fryer burger to your likening I suggest the following:

  • Air Fryer Burgers Medium Rare – 9 minutes at 180c
  • Air Fryer Burgers Medium – 11 minutes at 180c
  • Air Fryer Burgers Medium Well – 12 minutes at 180c
  • Air Fryer Burgers Well Done – 14 minutes at 180c

Though do note these cook times are for burgers made from beef as its essential that chicken burgers are fully cooked.

How Long To Cook Air Fryer Burgers?

Cooking burgers in the air fryer does not take that long. In fact, when we made our air fryer burgers the cook time was JUST 12 minutes.

You don’t have to flip your burgers and they are typical of a dump and go air fryer recipe.

What Temperature To Air Fry Burgers?

The best temperature for air fryer burgers is 180c/360f. This provides the air fryer with a medium heat and cooks the burgers through without worrying that they are overly well done.

Instructions

  • Peel and dice your onion and load it into a mixing bowl with the rest of your burger patty ingredients.

  • Mix well with your hands.

  • Add in the soft cheese and mix a little more.

  • Use a biscuit cutter to cut into burger shapes.

  • Load into the air fryer basket and cook for 12 minutes at 180c/360f.

  • Add your burger bun lid and serve.

Notes

The best ground mince for burgers is a mix of pork and beef. If you can’t get pork and beef already mixed, place half of each in the bowl.

Remember to slice your onion thin. Otherwise you will end up with big chunks of onion when you take a bite of your burger.

The addition of soft cheese stops your burger patty from going dry when air fried and improves the taste and texture of your burger.

12 minutes cook time is an approximate based on the size of our burger. If yours is bigger you should adjust and cook for a little longer if needed.

Season on both sides with salt, pepper, and burger seasoning. Preheat air fryer to 370°F. Cook for 5 minutes, then flip and cook another 5 minutes on the other side. If adding cheese, open the air fryer, top with cheese slices, then immediately close again to let the cheese melt for 1 minute after the burgers are done.

Olive Oil. One of the great things about the air fryer is its ability to lighten up traditionally heavy foods because you can use less oil, butter, and other fats. My recipe calls for 1 tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil. This helps keep the burger patties moist since we are using a leaner ground beef.

How do you keep burgers from puffing in an air fryer? ›

Can I put aluminum foil in an air fryer with burgers? ›

Foil is safe to use in an air fryer so long as you follow three basic rules: never let foil touch the heating element; make sure the foil is weighted so it doesn't blow around the basket; and avoid contact with acidic ingredients, which can cause the foil to leach onto your food.

What can I add to my burgers to keep them moist? ›

The workaround? Add the fat you seek directly to the meat. Butter is readily available, affordable, and adds moisture and fat to beef — making for a tender, juicy burger.

Why not to cook hamburger in air fryer? ›

Hamburgers. Air fryers aren't really designed to grill red meat, especially if you like your burgers medium-rare. Though it takes a fairly short amount of time for an air fryer to cook the inside of meat to medium-rare, the outside of the burger won't brown as quickly.

"Put a slice of bread on the bottom of your air fryer," said Kang. "It's a green alternative to foil for catching grease and drips for easier clean-up." In order to minimize food waste, you may want to only use this technique when cooking especially greasy foods (like bacon), and also use bread slices that are stale.

Can I use Pam in my air fryer? ›

Can you use PAM in the air fryer? You should not use nonstick cooking spray such as PAM in an air fryer because it can damage the lining of the air fryer basket.
