Geekbench 6

Let’s start with the Geekbench 6 CPU comparison between Dimensity 7200 Pro, Snapdragon 7s Gen 2, and Snapdragon 782G. The Nothing Phone (2a) (review), powered by Dimensity 7200 Pro (4nm), scored 1,114 and 2,561 in the single-core and multi-core tests, respectively.

In comparison, the Poco X6, which features the Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 (4nm), achieved a score of 1,032 in the single-core test, slightly below Dimensity 7200 Pro. However, this chipset scored the highest, achieving 2978 points in the multi-core test.

The inclusion of 4x Cortex-A78 cores (although older) has resulted in great multi-core performance for the Poco X6. Dimensity 7200 Pro packs newer ARM cores but only has 2x Cortex-A715 cores.

Next, the OnePlus Nord CE 3, powered by the older Snapdragon 782G (6nm) processor, got the highest single-core score of 1,135 and a great multi-core score of 2,947. That said, battery life will take a hit here as it’s fabricated on an older process node. Also, it packs the older Cortex-A78 and Cortex-A55 cores.

Overall, Nothing Phone (2a) is not a performance-centric smartphone, but it can handle everyday tasks with ease. Nothing has chosen efficiency over performance that delivers good performance without undercutting battery life.

CPU Throttling Test

In the CPU throttling test, the Snapdragon 782G on the OnePlus Nord CE 3 beats the Dimensity 7200 Pro and Snapdragon 7s Gen 2. However, the credit for this unparalleled performance goes to OnePlus for baking a large vapor chamber cooling system inside the Nord CE 3.

It helps dissipate the heat quickly, which sees the CPU sustain the performance over a longer period. That said, the Dimensity 7200 Pro on Nothing Phone (2a) also did a great job without any visible performance drop. Its instruction execution is still closer to Snapdragon 782G. Finally, the Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 came last in the CPU throttling test.

AnTuTu Benchmark

Moving to the AnTuTu benchmark test between Dimensity 7200 Pro, Snapdragon 7s Gen 2, and Snapdragon 782G. Here, the Nothing Phone (2a) scored the highest with a total score of 708424 points in the AnTuTu test. And the SD 7s Gen 2-powered Poco X6 got the lowest score of 584141 points.

The Snapdragon 782G again performs well, getting a score of 704138, but falls short of beating Dimensity 7200 Pro.

From the AnTuTu benchmark results, you can infer that the Mali G610 MC4 GPU on the Dimensity 7200 Pro performs particularly well. Keep in mind that Nothing has gone with a UFS 2.2 storage, but OnePlus has packed a faster UFS 3.1 storage.

During the AnTuTu test, the Nothing Phone (2a) reached a maximum temperature of 39°C on the back and 40°C on the front.

3DMark GPU Test

To test the performance of the Mali G610 MC4 GPU on the Dimensity 7200 Pro, we ran the 3DMark Wild Life Stress test. The Nothing Phone 2a got the best loop score of 4130 with a stability of 99.2%. In comparison, Snapdragon 7s Gen 2’s Adreno 710 GPU could only achieve the best loop score of 3029.

The older Adreno 642 GPU on the Snapdragon 782G performed even worse, getting the best loop score of 2861. In our gaming tests, the Nothing Phone (2a) performed pretty well. We did not notice any stutters while playing BGMI, CoD Mobile, and Asphalt 9. Even on Genshin Impact, with medium graphics, the gameplay was smooth.

Connectivity 5G Speed Test

Finally, we come to our 5G speed test. The Snapdragon 7s Gen 2, packing Qualcomm’s X62 5G modem performed the best, achieving 637 Mbps in peak download speed, and 70.7 Mbps in peak upload speed. Note that, the test was done on an Airtel 5G network. On Jio’s 5G network, it didn’t perform well.

Next, the Snapdragon 782G reached a peak download speed of 426 Mbps. For uploads, it achieved 16.9 Mbps. MediaTek’s 5G modem in Dimensity 7200 Pro reached 361 Mbps and 29.3 Mbps in download and upload tests, respectively. These tests were done on Jio’s 5G network.

The Verdict

After going through all the benchmark comparisons, I think Nothing has chosen an all-around performant chipset for Nothing Phone (2a). By steering clear of older ARM cores, available on Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 and Snapdragon 782G, Nothing bets its money on efficiency rather than performance. It’s also evident from our battery life tests where we got over 7 hours and 30 minutes of screen-on time.

Having said that, the performance is not bad at all. The Dimensity 7200 Pro on the Phone (2a) is a capable chipset, packing newer ARM cores and built on TSMC’s 4nm process node. In addition, its GPU performance is head and shoulder above other competing chipsets. Users can enjoy some light gaming as well.
