Oreo Truffles Recipe - Dessert for Two (2024)

I hacked the recipe for Oreo balls so that you can make exactly how many truffles you need! It's just not the holidays without these oreo truffles on a pretty plate, so make a big batch or a small batch for an edible gift!

Why you will love these Oreo Balls

Whether you are making these for yourself or a cookie exchange party, it will be hard to find an easier recipe for Oreo Balls. I cut the recipe in half and used 20 Oreos and half the amount of cream cheese typically required. The math works out to about the same number of Oreo balls as the number of Oreos you use, so you are very welcome to scale down this recipe further.

Just to be clear, you'll get roughly 1 Oreo Ball truffle for each Oreo cookie you use. So, scale this recipe up or down

The next time I have an ounce or two of leftover cream cheese from making small batch cinnamon rolls or my cheesecake for two, I will make another small batch of Oreo balls.

If you find yourself with a few remaining Oreos in the package, these are great to make! Plus, I also have cookies and cream cupcakes, and Oreo brownies, if you really need help using up those cookies.

Oreo Balls Recipe ingredients

With only 4 ingredients, it's really hard to find a dessert or snack recipe that is easier to whip up.

  • Oreo Cookies. We need 22 oreo cookies, or similar cream-filled chocolate sandwich cookies.
  • Cream Cheese. Half a block (4 ounces) of cream cheese, softened almost to room temperature.
  • White Chocolate. I really recommend using the white candy melts instead of real white chocolate, because they're much easier to melt. I find them at the craft store, and I love that they can be melted over and over again until you're done with the batch. You can also use almond bark, which is very similar; anything but real white chocolate, to be honest.
  • Mini Chocolate Chips. In order to make half of the oreo balls chocolate, we'll mix in ⅓ cup of mini chocolate chips. I prefer the mini ones because they're easier to melt. This is entirely optional, and you can make the entire batch all white chocolate, if you prefer.

How to Make Oreo Balls

These cookie truffles are essentially just smashed Oreos mixed with cream cheese, rolled in balls, and dunked in chocolate.

Crush the cookies! The fastest way to smash the Oreos is to use a food processor. Make sure you crush the entire cooking, cream centers, and all.

Place the cookie crumbs in a bowl, and add the softened cream cheese and stir together. You can also add the cream cheese to the food processor, if you prefer.

Using a small cookie scoop, roll the mixture into balls. Use your hands to make the balls super smooth with no edges (so that the coating goes on well).

Place the truffles on a plate and freeze for 1 hour. repeat: you must freeze the balls for at least an hour before rolling.

Melt the white chocolate coating for dipping in two bowls. Add the mini chocolate chips to one bowl, and stir to dissolve. They usually melt easily with the residual heat of the white chocolate.

Using a fork, dip each frozen oreo ball in the coating of choice. Tap the fork on the edge of the bowl to allow extra chocolate to drip off. Move the oreo truffles back to the plate that has been lined with parchment or wax paper. Move them back to the freezer or fridge to set, and serve.

Oreo Balls Recipe Tips

  • Holidays! You can amok these oreo balls in any shape to make them for any holiday. The video I made for this recipe features an egg shape for Easter. You can also decorate the balls with seasonal sprinkles, too!
  • This is a great recipe for the entire family to get involved with. I highly recommend placing the cookies in a resealable bag and letting your kids crush the cookies.
  • When working with cream cheese, always make sure it's softened at room temperature to it's easier to incorporate with the oreo cookies.
  • To make sure all of the cookies are the same size, I use this small cookie scoop.

How to store Oreo Truffles

The best way to store Oreo balls is in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Heat is not an oreo truffle’s best friend. Keep these treats cool in the fridge and they’re ready to serve any time you need them.

Are you supposed to refrigerate Oreo balls?

If you like your chocolate outside layer to be a bit harder, you can store these balls in the refrigerator.

Can you freeze Oreo Balls?

Besides freezing the Oreo Balls to set the cookie, you can also keep them in the freezer before you want to add the outer shell.

How long are Oreo Balls good for?

Because Oreo balls are kept cold in the fridge, they last for 2-3 weeks in an airtight container. If you want to get a jumpstart on holiday baking, you can make these 3 months in advance and freeze them. Thaw in the fridge overnight before serving.

Oreo Truffles Recipe FAQs

Why are my Oreo balls wet?

If the inside of your Oreo ball is wet, make sure you followed the recipe and used block cream cheese (not whipped), and make sure you froze the balls before attempting to dip them in chocolate. The truffles should be cold before dipping, otherwise the insides can soften and get a bit soggy when being dipped into hot, melted chocolate. Dip them in chocolate, and then immediately place in fridge to harden. However, if the outside of the Oreo ball is wet, it is just condensation from going from the fridge to room temperature. Move them back to the fridge for a bit. Going from the cold fridge to a warm room will make the surface sweat. The best way to prevent this is to store them in the fridge up until serving.

Can you buy pre crushed oreos?

While I have never seen pre crushed oreos at my grocery store, I have seen them online. However, I would not use pre crushed oreos for making oreo balls! Pre-crushed cookies are dryer and have much less moisture than freshly crushed.

How do you keep Oreo balls from sweating?

Keep your balls in the freezer, dude.

Oreo Truffles Recipe - Dessert for Two (13)

A small batch of Oreo balls.

Prep Time30 minutes

Cook Time5 minutes

Total Time35 minutes

Ingredients

  • 22 Oreo cookies (or similar cream-filled sandwich cookies)
  • 4 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 8 ounces white chocolate candy coating pieces
  • ⅓ cup mini chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. In a food processor, crush the cookies until they're completely pulverized. If you're not using a food processor, you can crush them by hand in a resealable plastic bag.
  2. Place the cookie crumbs in a bowl of a stand mixer with the paddle attachment, and beat the cream cheese into the mixture. You can also do this by hand, just make sure the cream cheese is very soft.
  3. Use a cookie scoop to scoop out evenly sized pieces of the batter, and roll in your hands to form perfect ball shapes. Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet, and freeze for one hour.
  4. Divide the white chocolate candy pieces into 2 bowls, and melt them in the microwave according to the package directions. To one of the bowls, stir in the mini chocolate chips; stir until melted. Try not to put the chocolate chips in the microwave--they don't love the microwave heat and might seize. The white chocolate should be hot enough to melt the mini chips. If you're not using mini chocolate chips, chop the chocolate very small.
  5. Using a fork, dunk each Oreo ball into the chocolate. I like to make half white chocolate and half regular chocolate.
  6. Place in the fridge to harden, and store in the fridge until serving. They will keep for 5 days (if they last that long!)
